SPOKANE, Wash. -- A truck struck a power pole near Whitworth University Thursday morning, partially knocking the pole down.

Authorities said the collision happened around 3 a.m. on North Waikiki Road on the west side of the Whitworth University campus. The crash also damaged a parked car and a chain-link fence. The driver of the truck appeared to be okay and did not require an ambulance. The person fell asleep at the wheel, according to Sheriff's deputies. Deputies also said, however, the driver was not cited.

Utility crews arrived to make repairs to the damaged pole. Five customers experienced power outages as a result of the crash.

A section of Waikiki Road from Hawthorne to North Five Mile Road was expected to be shut down for hours while crews cleaned up the scene. Deputies recommended drivers use Division as an alternate route.
